W+K Portland’s new volunteer initiative W+K Cares will connect agency employees with the local Portland community. Charity team member Jessie Simmons of Account Services has shared her thoughts with us and described the first W+K outing: a trip to non-profit Zenger Farm. Check it out below.

“W+K loves PDX, and lucky for us, we have nearly 700 interesting characters in this building who can contribute something special to the community. So, W+K is partnering with Hands On Portland to give back. Our new volunteer program, W+K Cares, launched at the agency last Thursday. Each month, W+K Cares will be sending a different group from the office into the community to spend a half-day doing some good and enjoying a little good ol’ fashioned team bonding.

We kicked off the program by sending our Accounting and Project Management departments to Zenger Farm to work in the dirt. Zenger Farm is a non-profit farm and wetland in Portland that models, promotes and educates about sustainable food systems, environmental stewardship, community development and access to good food for all.

The group spent the afternoon trimming garlic, working in the children’s garden and weeding collard greens and cucumbers. They attempted to weed the basil garden as well, but were “reassigned” due to a lack of proper weeding skills. City folks!

They also cleaned up the peppers and cucumbers and picked fresh plums. At the end of the day, the amazing hosts at the farm rewarded them with a feast of fresh cantaloupe for a job well done.

A huge thanks to Hands On Portland and Zenger Farm. Our team loved the experience!
